Pyrrhus was a Hellenistic Greek king of Epirus, in southern Greece, during the second half of the 3rd century BC. He succeeded his father, Anaxandridas II, around the year 280 BC. He is best known for his role in the Pyrrhic War (280–275 BC), which pitted him against the Roman Empire. The war ended with Pyrrhus' defeat in 278 BC at the Battle of Heraclea.
